Rivian has officially confirmed that its new R2 electric SUV will begin deliveries in the United States starting June 9, marking one of the company’s most important launches since the original R1 lineup.

Ahead of the launch, final EPA ratings for the vehicle have now surfaced — and the numbers are already creating serious competition for Tesla.

According to official EPA data, the Rivian R2 Performance AWD variant with 21-inch wheels delivers an estimated 330 miles of range, which is higher than the recently published EPA rating for the 2026 Tesla Model Y AWD.

The 2026 Tesla Model Y AWD carries an EPA-estimated range of 306 miles, while Rivian’s new R2 Performance variant stretches that figure to 330 miles.

What makes the achievement more impressive is the fact that the R2 is reportedly larger, taller, and roughly 800 pounds heavier than Tesla’s SUV.

Despite the extra weight and less aerodynamic shape, the Rivian R2 still manages to match the Model Y in efficiency with a combined 105 MPGe rating.

MPGe, or Miles Per Gallon Equivalent, is the EPA’s efficiency measurement system for electric vehicles.

The higher range figure could become a major selling point for Rivian as EV buyers continue prioritising real-world battery performance and long-distance usability.

Different Wheel Options Affect Range Performance

Rivian will also offer the R2 with optional 20-inch all-terrain wheels aimed at buyers looking for a more rugged setup.

However, the larger off-road-focused tyre package slightly reduces efficiency and battery range.

The all-terrain version of the R2 carries:

  • 307 miles EPA range
  • 99 combined MPGe efficiency

That still keeps the SUV competitive within the growing midsize electric SUV segment.

Rivian Begins Demo Drives and Early Deliveries

Rivian says customers can already begin saving their preferred R2 configurations through the company’s official website.

The automaker will start:

  • Sending order invitations
  • Offering demo drives
  • Beginning first customer deliveries

starting June 9 across the United States.

Current Rivian R1 owners with existing reservations will receive accelerated delivery access, although Rivian also says some early reservation holders will be selected randomly for initial production batches.

Customers who complete orders after receiving invitations may receive deliveries within two to six weeks.

The launch arrives during an increasingly competitive period for the EV market as automakers continue focusing heavily on software, battery efficiency, and charging infrastructure improvements.

TechularZtrix Take

The Rivian R2 already looks positioned as one of the most important electric SUV launches of 2026. Delivering more EPA-rated range than the Tesla Model Y while carrying a larger and heavier design gives Rivian a strong technical advantage heading into launch. If the company can maintain production consistency and fast deliveries, the R2 could become Rivian’s most mainstream EV yet.
